i have the free AVG aniti virus programme on my PC but lately it keeps telling me that its updating with the latest version everytime i turn the PC on and then it says i have to restart the PC. And this has been going on for weeks now. Its getting a little tiresome. What do i do so it stops doing this??

I would highly recomment looking at an AV program like AVAST - in terms of free versions its much stronger than AVG

I think you may need to go into Update Manager Component Nick and Untick Start Automatic Updates.

Also AVG the new version is no longer FREE. Only the older versions are still FREE.

Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. Here are some Anti Virus products which are free for personal use and most used:
AntiVir (http://www.free-av.com/)
Avast (http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html)
BitDefender (http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-8-Free-Edition.html)

The new version of AVG is indeed still free for home use. Here's the link:
AVG Free - Download AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition for Windows XP and Vista (http://free.avg.com/ww.download-avg-anti-virus-free-edition)

If you want to continue using AVG, I suggest using that link to download the new version and run the setup. It will update the old AVG 7.5 to AVG 8.
