Welcome to Free PC Help
Can you play CD's using Windows Media Player?
Is the red x you are talking about in Device Manager?

i still use real player and think the red x refers to the fact that the media information is saved in the library, but the media itself is not saved on the hard drive.
before saving and media i think you should go to real player preferences and tell it to save newly inserted cd's to my music, then you should be able to play them again.
hope it works.
i use real player and windows media player and can't make my mind up which is the better.

tismehi that makes a whole lot of sense. Good one.
I haven't used RealPlayer in years so I can't verify it. But it makes sense and you have it so very likely you are right.
If I understand you correctly since the CD is not in the drive after adding it to the library the player can't find the media. Is that right?
If so then the files need to be copied to a location on the hard drive then added to the library. Does that make sense?
I await everyones feed back as you bring up a very good point.
Edit: It seems that is exactly what you are saying. Brilliant deduction and fix too.

i came across this many moons ago when i usb connected a portable hard drive with hundreds of albums on , then when it was detached, the information was still in the library but unplayable, obviously.
hopefully this is an easy fix for the user.
