disk i/o error

Hi. I am putting together a new system and when i finally went to boot to a system disk to start loading my operating system, i kept getting a disk i/o error on a floppy drive that i know works. i checked the bios setting and could not find any reason for the mb to not recognize the floppy. i tried a couple fdd cables, even in different configurations, and was able to get the disk to read once but not again. any ideas on whats creating this problem. its a gigabyte board, ga-ma690vm with an amd 4200 x2 processor. and a wd 160gb sata drive. thanks for any and all help.
