Hey, My PC on windows xp home just started up in dos mode (i think thats what its called) after forced shutdown.
It is diplaying a black screen with white text:

checking the status of your hard disk....

I have never heard of a Windows XP machine starting up in such a mode. I would contact your computer manufacturer for technical assistance.

hit f8 and go into safe mode. if that does not work at the icon type in dir c:\windows and see if anything comes up to verify if windows still exists. if it does repair the xp instalation

HI Dan

try booting from a xp cd and run recovery console when at the prompt type chkdsk/r
if you cant get to the console you will get an error message and it will be your partition on the hard drive that is corrupted
