What is the exact model of your drive n00bz?

Maybe it's not a combo drive that can read both.

What kind of copied CD's can't you read? Do you have a third party software installed?

Use some compressed air to blow out any dust in the drive.

Since you tried both retail and home-made disks, I believe the CD portion of the drive has failied. The electonis for reading/writing CD and DVD are different. If the lens is clean, the the electonics for the CD side has failed.

If the electronis has failed, you have to replace the drive. The home user will not be able to fix the failed drive.

umm ok but for this method:
Click Start > Click Run Type in "regedit" (without qoutes)

Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Highlight the "upperFilters" and "LowerFilters" if any and go to edit-delete.

I only had the subkey, LowerFilters i didnt have upperFilters

Okay well more than likely it's given up the ghost so to speak.

Right click on My Computer and chose Manage, then select DEVICE MANAGER in the list on the left, then on the right side select your CD-ROM under DVD/CD-ROM drives and it should show the make and model of the drive.

Let us know what that says and we can look up and see if we can find a firmware update. If that does not work then you'll probably need to buy a new drive.

DRW-1609P3S

Are you sure it is DRW-1609P3S and not DRW-1608P3S
I do not find DRW-1609P3S but I do find DRW-1608P3S

ASUS DRW-1608P3S firmware version 1.24
Modify drive will recognize disc as wrong Book Type (DVD disc will reconigzed as DVD-R).
Fix playing delay issue with some DVD-9 discs with ASUS DVD Player version 6.0 3.
Improve DVD-RW full access time is too long issue with Nero-CDspeed(version 4.51.2)
Please confirm that your drive is a DRW-1608P3S and if so get this firmware update. Unzip it and copy both files to a new folder you create, then double click the executable file to update the firmware on the drive and see if that fixes it. If this does not work then I think you'll need to buy a new drive.

Click here to download the firmware update.

They're not repairable.

I agree with the rest, time for a new drive.
