DVI female to VGA Male Convertor issues.

Hi there I was wondering if you could help me. Today I went out and bought a DVI female to VGA Male convertor to take DVI out of my graphics card and plug it into the VGA input on my monitor. Meaning there is a DVI cable leaving my computer and entering the convertor which is plugged into a VGA socket. I get absoloutely no picture or signal or anything from this. I don't really know too much about this but I assumed it would just work. Yet when I plug my old VGA cable into the VGA out on my graphics card and into the monitor, there are no problems. The reason I don't just do that is long winded and beside the point. How can I make this work? Cheers

Well if you notice on my link that M/F connector is supplied as is the DVI-D to the main connector.
It may be preferential to buy that instead.
