Excell spreadsheet freezes kicks off computer and word opens and works

When I try to open an excell spreadsheet my laptops shuts down. I can open word but typing and scrolling are really slow. I have run antivirus and spyware and nothing comes up. Any suggestions?

Ensure that you have updated windows office via microsoft website. There are many security vulnerabilities that need plugging. Try this first

I have been trying to delete Microsoft Windows due to the fact that I cannot even get to the Windows update site and it is taking a very long time. Just trying to get to the control panel takes forever. It searches like it cannot find the control panel. It takes 5-10 minutes just to open the control panel. I cannot even do a system restore.
