HELP! - Internet access for PC

I run a 1 year old HP Laptop using Windows XP however I have never been able to get on the internet wirelessly.

I can connect to my home wireless network, from the list of wireless networks i put in the password etc and all is fine, however when I then type in a website address I am told I am not connected to the internet.

Previously I could access the internet by plugging in the cable, however...

Having then fiddled with the internet settings on the laptop (tools - Internet settings etc) I am now not even able to access the internet with the cable plugged.

I know I must have done something that is simple to fix however I am perplexed!

Can anyone assist?
