I have a Windows 2000 machine here. Internet Explorer isn't working properly. It opens, but you can't do anything with it. The menus don't open if you click on them and you can't X out. I did the IE repair. Problem persists. Works OK in Safe Mode w/ Networking. I also noticed that it actually starts working OK if you let it alone for a few minutes.

Because it works OK in Safe Mode, it may be something in the startup. Here's the log.

Have you tried an Internet Explorer reset or restore advanced settings?

EDIT. Sorry did not see its running IE6. Can't you install IE7?

Yes - I reset IE and restored adv settings.
As far as I know IE 7 doesn't run on W2K.

This is another interesting sympton: I brought up IE and let it sit for a few minutes so that it would respond. It was working OK. Then I brought up Windows Update with opened a new IE browser window. That window didn't start loading until a few minutes passed. Once it loaded, everything is fine.

Hi Kelly.

The log is clean.

You're correct, if IE works in SM/WN, then it has to be a startup program. I would suspect ZA followed by AVG.

Disable ZA from msconfig in both the startup and services tab. For the services, it's easier to view the third party services by checking "Hide MS services".

If that doesn't work, do the same for AVG followed by the rest of the startup items.

that's where I'm headed. So far, it's not ZA. Symptom remains - from the time IE opens until it will respond to anything is 90 seconds. Within that 90 seconds, the menus won't open and you can't X out. Alt-F4 has no effect. Same happens after IE is open and you bring up a New browser window.

All non-MS services turned off and everything in msconfig startup turned off. Problem persists. mobsync keeps re-enabling itself in msconfig startup. Working on keeping that app off.

Got mobsync to stop enabling itself. Problem persists. Seth says the log is clean. I'll end the thread here and maybe start a new one in the W2K forum.

Did you run some malware scans?

I'd suggest an sfc/scannow, but that shouldn't work given that Internet Explorer is fine in SF/wN.

Try this if it works in 2000:

Method 4: Reinstall Internet Explorer 6 by using the internet explorer.inf file

If you already have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed, and you do not want to install Internet Explorer 7, you may be able to resolve problems with Internet Explorer 6 by using the Ie.inf file to reinstall Internet Explorer 6. To do this, follow these steps: 1.Click Start, click Run, type %systemroot%inf, and then press Enter. 2. Find the Ie.inf file that is located in WindowsInf folder. 3. Right-click the Ie.inf file, and then click Install. 4.Restart the computer when the file copy process is complete.

BTW-Is Firefox ok?

Seth - thanks but neither worked.
There's an IE Uninstall app in C:\Prog Files\Internet Explorer and that doesn't do anything.

I have an image of this machine from when it was here for a rebuild in Oct '06. I put the Acronis image on an ext backup hard drive that the customer provided. I'm going to backup the user's files, load the image, and restore the files.
