memory stick fault

Hi

My memory stick is no longer recognized by my computer. My computer has been checked and all drivers are up to date etc. The stick has been checked and there is no physical damage. I have been told that to get my photos off this stick I will need to send it off as it is a highly specialized job which could cost 100's of pounds.

My question is this. Is this my only option ? Can anyone recommend anyone or company to do this ?

Thanks
Lee

Hi Lee,

It sounds as if the Memory Stick may have died [ corrupted ].

Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you FORMAT the Memory Stick. [ you will lose ALL DATA ]

1. Have you tried the Memory Stick in another computer?
It could be a problem with your USB ports

If you get the same results from a different computer .......

2. Plug the Memory Stick in.
Does the computer give any indication [ sound ] that a device has been plugged in ?

3. Locate "Computer"
You should see something like the image below:
Does the Memory Stick show as a drive letter?

4.Click on Start [ bottom left of screen ] and type in .... diskmgmt.msc ...hit Enter
Does the Memory Stick show here ? It will be a drive number labelled "Removable" or similar

Hi Lee,

I assume that you have tried the Memory Stick in another computer ?

It is showing "no media" but this is not necessarily the case.

Try the following:
Go back to Disk Management [dskmgmt.msc] and right click on Disk 1
If "Change Drive Letter" is an option click on this then change the Drive Letter to F or G or H [ doesn't really matter ]
Unplug the Memory Stick and re-plug it in.
Can you access it now ?

If not .........

Start > type in ........ cmd ...... [ do not hit Enter yet ]
Now hold down CTRL and SHIFT ......and press ENTER at the same time.
This should allow you to run Command Prompt as Administrator

At the Command Prompt type ........ chkdsk E: /R........ hit Enter [ E: is the drive letter attached to the Memory Stick - as shown in your image ]
If you managed to change the Drive Letter then use this instead of E:
The system should check the Memory Stick and repair any errors it finds.

After the scan try to access the Memory Stick again.

Cannot oen volume for direct access
Confirming that there is a problem with the Memory Stick.

Try this recovery software [ EaseUs ] - click here
It suggests that you can restore 2GB free
The Pro version is no better than the free - it just lets you recover more data.

After installing run the software with your Memory Stick in a USB port.
Hopefully it will find it.
You can then select that drive [ E: ? ] to scan.

Recovery should be straight forward if it locates your photos.

Ive got Recuva.com software. Which i presume is the same. I can scan other sticks and drives no problem but it wont recognise that theres anything in E to scan when i insert this particular stick

Are you sure that the USB ports are working OK ?
Did you try the Memory Stick on another computer?

Give EaseUs a try - it is probably the best on the market.
If the Memory Stick is showing in Disk Management it should be picked up.

Same with EaseUs. It wont recognise that there is a stick in USB. Other sticks are picked up. Tried in other computer with same result.
Do you think it is worth sending stick off to specialist ?

Hi,
Do you think it is worth sending stick off to specialist ?
If neither recovery option locates the Memory Stick then your only option, from my point of view, is to use a specialist company.

The problem is, these companies are not cheap and there would be no guarantees.

I would contact them first and get some idea of prices.

I am sorry that we cannot be of any further help. :(

Sorry that I couldn't solve your problem.
Hopefully you may be able to get your photos off the Memory Stick and it wont cost you too much.
