Is the CD you placed in the drive a disk you made yourself, or is it one you brought from a shop/store?

Has this suddenly happened, or have you never been able to play a music CD?

VLC will play just about any CD.
My guess you haven't got a Genuine Copyrighted CD.
They will play in any Computer.
I would take the Copy back to the shop.
I think it's a burnt Copy.

Is nothing at all happening when you insert the CD - as in can you hear it spin up in drive or anything like that?

Can you go to control panel and then hardware and sound, then device manager - is the CD/DVD rom listed or are there any yellow exclamation marks next to anything?
