PC clicks loudly, now family is fighting!

Today my PC started emitting loud rhythmical clicks tikka-tikka-tikka, freezing when it did so. This was sporadic, getting worse, so I decided to reboot. Got "Disk Boot Error". :(
My husband says let's have a go at booting, by using the recovery disk ( running XP Home) and either doing Recovery or Re-install. Son says "No!! Don't do that, because you are liable to lose data. Better to remove hard drive and link to another PC, and he will be able to retrieve data ( ***uming HDD not f***ed)".
What would you do? As you can tell, I don't know a great deal myself....
Thank you!
