Hi Clucky

Welcome to Free PC Help

Have you cleaned out your temporary internet files, defragged lately?
What anti virus program and firewall program do you run?
Do you get any obscure pop ups?
Which browser are you running; Internet Explorer, Firefox etc?

If it's just slow on the Internet, then as Wolfeymore suggested, you should delete your temporary Internet files. If you're running Internet Explorer, you can set it to do that automatically when you exit the browser. The option is in TOOLS | INTERNET OPTIOS | ADVANCED tab. It's down near the bottom of the list. I do not recommend doing this if you're connecting via dial-up.

Now if you're computer is slow doing everything, it may be some kind of malware and we can address that once you tell us if the computer is slow all the time or only on the Internet.

Spybot and Adaware are old programs and are no longer reliable Clucky

Your computer may be infected with Malware.

Malware is the term used to describe computer infections such as Adware, Spyware, Viruses, and Trojan Horses.
You will need to run at least two malware scanners as well as an Antivirus scanner that are listed in the following instructions.
Anti-Malware and Anti-Virus scanners perform different tasks.
The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something.

The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection.
Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 30 and 90 minutes.
The Eset online scan should take between 1 and 3 hours.
In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer.

For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page
To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below.
From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range"
click the Selection choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Follow these instructions carefully.
  • Download ATF-Cleaner from Snapfiles.com to remove "junk" files from your computer that may contain malware.
  • You can also download it from Majorgeeks.com
  • When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main.
  • For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox
  • NOTE: If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored
  • Then click on "Empty Selected".
.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from SUPERAntiSpyware.com - AntiAdware, AntiSpyware, AntiMalware!
    • Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files.
    • You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next.
    • You can leave the automated check for updates on.
    • You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information.
    • DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings.
    • On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button.
    • Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives.
    • Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" and reboot the computer when prompted to do so.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • Disable your internet security by right clicking on its icon (usually located in the system tray next to the time display) and choosing "Exit", "Disable", or "Shut Down".
  • Run an online scan with Eset from Free Virus Scan: Use ESET's Online Antivirus Scanner
  • You must use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan.
  • Accept the terms and click "Start".
  • Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications".
  • Click "Start" to begin the scan.
  • When completed restart your computer
Make sure your internet security is enabled, and then please return to Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating.
At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted.

There are others here more experienced than I who I know will chime in.

In the meantime, I would start your computer in Safe Mode with Networking. This is done by tapping the F8 key shortly after starting your computer. You will see a start menu. Arrow to Safe Mode with Networking. It will look different than usual.

Bring up Internet Explorer and go to ewido - anti-spyware and anti-malware solutions and scan your computer.

Run the SAS first Clucky and then run Malwarebytes and then finally run the Eset scan.
Do them separately.

Kelly / Wolfeymole,

I ran the program that Kelly recomended, I then ran Wolfeymole's programs (in the correct order). It looks like it cleared up a few problems.

The pc seems to be performing a lot better now. I can switch between application instantly, previously it would take a couple of minutes.

It takes a while to boot up, mainly i think because there are too many applications running in the background (is this soemthing that can be sorted?), but the main thing is that it now works ok when is fully booted.

Thanks for your help

Donation on its way

Hi

Good to hear you are up and running again.

To disable programs from running at start-up do the following:

Go to start -> Run and type msconfig

Put a dot by selective startup and click on the startup tab

Uncheck all programs you dont want to run at start-up. Keep all security software checked. If you are unsure about certain entrees please do not hesitate to ask.

Hi Clucky.

I just had a look at your log.

1) Go to Add/Remove programs and remove "My Web Search".

2) Go to Start>Run, type in msconfig and click OK. Put a dot on Selective Startup and click on the Startup tab. Scroll through that list and uncheck all items except "Jusched" and any items that refer to AVG and Sygate. Click Apply>OK, and restart the computer when prompted. When the message appears that you have used the "System Startup Utility", just put a check in "Don't show me this message again".

The msconfig step may only help the startup a bit, as the slow start could very well be caused by AVG and Sygate loading up. Also note that AVG free does a complete scan once a day. This can often be at startup and will slow down the computer. You'll know it's happening as you will see two AVG icons in the System Tray.

3) If you are not constantly using Messenger but it loads at startup, then you can go into it's preferences/options and disable it from starting when Windows starts.

Hi Seth,

I could not find the program" my web search" so unable to delete it.

I have unchecked all the other items as suggested in msconfig. PC is certainly coming up a lot faster.

Thanks

Ok, good stuff.

Run HT again and put a check in these two items only, then click "Fix Checked". Restart the computer if prompted.

I recommend keeping SuperAntiSpyware as a manual scanner that you can update and run once a week. Note that the free version does not have real time protection or automatic updates.

You're good to go. Enjoy:)
