I rebuilt my computer about 6 weeks ago A new ASUS motherboard (P5V-VM DH ) Intel Celeron D processor , DDR2 RAM and new hard drive, everything worked great until a few days ago when it went into stand by.
When I tried to restart the computer I had no signal to the monitor no sound from the motherboard, the cpu fan starts the hard drive appeared to try to start but nothing happened, the motherboard has a green light to say that it is live.
My friend has tried a new power pack and no difference we have also disconnected cd-rom & DVD player. I have no extras on the mother board has I use the integrated sound card. When I turn the power on the system automatically tries to start also I cannot turn off the power other than by the PCU. i am running XP home
Any ideas.

It sounds to me as if you have a faulty component. It sounds most likely to be your RAM. As you can't test it out, I'd recommend buying some and see whether it is the problem. If it isn't, you can return it.
