desktop failed to shutdown in usual manner. following day, at start=up no P.O.S.T showing.though all fans running
no graphics, assumed hard drive failed though can hear it running
Question? would board failure seem most likely or CPU how can this be identified
Asus M5A-78L-M AMD phenom running Vista home premium.

If you are getting no POST then it is probably a hardware problem.
I wrote a tutorial some time back on "No POST"
Take a look here - click here

Don't take the CPU out - yet.

read and followed Ken's suggestions. good thoughts, very helpful diagnosis plan.
in my case it proved to be the worst. Board or CPU. Have ordered a
replacement board. fingers crossed shall hear those magic beeps once more
