Hi phil;
What make and model is this computer?
What do you mean it had drive problems?

To install XP from disk you need to set the boot order in the BIOS to boot from the CDROM first. Then SAVE the changes and exit the BIOS. To enter the BIOS depends on your computer so we need to know.

Once that's done insert the XP disk. It should be bootable and the installation screen will appear.

If you're trying to install from a factory partion on the drive you may have wiped it using DBan. In which case you're out of luck.

The drive itself can't boot without an operating system installed.
XP is not a DOS based operating system.

If the drive was having problems we need to know what kind. The drive might be bad.

Let us know.

If the disk was indeed wiped, the boot order won't matter because there is no operating system on it. The BIOS will look for the first bootable device and it should see the Window XP CD. If the machine is more than 8 years old, it may not be capable of booting to a CD.

Setup, BIOS, CMOS are used interchangeably. So if you're in Setup, then you're in the BIOS. What are you seeing?
