windows xp - Freezes on the welcome screen

Hi
I have a problem that's starting to drive me mad. Last Friday before work I quickly went online and checked my emails. I shut down properly but when I came home from work and turned my computer on it froze on the blue welcome screen. I rebooted loads of times and nothing changed. My sister's partner knows about computers and came over Saturday to help me. He took out all the graphics cards, memory, hard drive and plug ins and cleaned out all the dust from the fan. When he put the computer back together it worked fine. He did a check on if it was a virus and couldn't find anything wrong with it. He said maybe it was just the fan had got dusty.
My computer worked fine all week but then Wednesday night it went again. Froze on the welcome screen. I took the back off and checked for dust, turned it on again and it was fine. This morning it did it again. Not really needing it I didn't bother about it and went to do other things. I came back to my bedroom where the computer is and tried and it started fine.

It's driving me mad because it can be on all night from 6pm to 4am and work absolutely fine and once it does turn on there's no error messgaes or anything to signal a problem. Does anyone have any ideas what it could be?
Thanks

Welcome to Free PC Help Starshine.

The successful startup after the work was done on the inside of the computer may have been a coincidence.

Let's have a look at what's running on your computer before we do anything else:

Please go here and download the HijackThis Installer:

http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download

Run the program and click on Scan Only. A log will be created. Please copy and paste that log back in this thread.

Good luck:)

The log shows one infection and numerous needless startup programs that will cause system degradation and possible software conflicts.

Please click Start, Run, type in msconfig and click ok. Put a dot on Selective Startup and click on the Startup tab. Scroll through the list and uncheck every item except for Symantec (Norton) entries and the Sun Java Updater. Click Apply, OK, and restart the computer when prompted. You'll know you did it right as a message will appear that you've used the startup utility. Just put a check in "Don't show me this again".

After the restart, go back to run command and type in chkdsk /f and press ok (note the space between the K and the /). Choose Y at the black screen that appears and restart the computer which will initiate hard drive error checking (chkdsk)

Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from www.superantispyware.com

* Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files.
* You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next.
* You can leave the automated check for updates on.
* You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information.
* DO NOT allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings.
* On the Top Left select the Scan your computer button.
* Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all Fixed Drives.
* Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" and reboot the computer when prompted to do so.

Once the scan is complete and you restart, your computer should be running much better. Please follow up by posting a new HijackThis log as well as the SuperAntiSpyware log which is found in the programs Preferences>Statistics/Logs.

Ok, looking better.

Did the hard drive error checking run?

Go back to msconfig and uncheck:

nvcpl or nvstartup

aim/aol (If you don't need that running at startup).

I also noted you only ran a quick scan and not a complete scan with SuperAntiSpyware. Go ahead and run a complete scan, then please report back on how the computer is operating.

I live on AIM and actually don't really use my internet connection for much else so I need that.

I did run a full scan on SuperAntiSpyware but the results showed a few things I'd rather not post on an open forum where everyone can see them so I removed them and did another scan to produce a log.

I don't think I'll know if it's helped till I turn the computer off as my computer isn't really affected apart from not starting up, and at the moment all my friends are on aim to talk to and I'm stuffed if it doesn't come back on. I'll report back tomorrow after shutting down and turning it back on again.

It may well be that what you edited out is effecting your computer Dizzy.
Please send the full log to any Administrator or Moderator via pm.
We will look at it and offer the course of action you need to take after that.

Ok, so leave aim in msconfig.

As far as what Super found, if it's just tracking cookies then don't worry about, as tracking cookies aren't really threats. Was that all it found?

It's still freezing on the windows welcome page. I was online till 6am last night, went to bed for a few hours and turned it off. It turned on fine again when I woke up so I thought it was ok. Turned it off to go shopping but now I'm home it froze on the welcome screen twice, then on my desk top and now on the fourth time it's running ok.

Well Starshine, we've covered pretty much everything can to rule out a software issue. Granted, to fully rule out a software problem you would have to do a full system recovery.

Mods,

At this point, I suspect a hardware problem. Agreed?

The only other thing I can think of at this time is to start in Safe Mode. This would rule out marginally conflicting software. The problem is that once booted to Safe Mode, lots of things won't work.

If you can predict when and how ofter the machine gets stuck you have something to start with. Say for instance, it gets stuck 3 of 5 times. Then you can try booting to Safe Mode several times and see if you get the same results.

To boot to Safe Mode, tap the F8 key several times after starting the machine until you get the Start Menu. Then choose Safe Mode.
